BOISE, Idaho - The University of Idaho women's soccer team remained winless on the season after a 4-0 loss to Montana at the Governor's Cup Tournament.
The Grizzlies (2-2-0) scored a goal in the fourth minute then added three second half goals to down the Vandals (0-4-0).
"This was our best game yet in terms of effort," Idaho coach Pete Showler said. "The score doesn't reflect the game, but we played very well. After we got down 1-0 in the first half we took it to them. We were the better team. We had scoring opportunities, but we couldn't convert. They converted on theirs and that was the difference. I am deflated for the players because they put it all out on the field."
Montana held the advantage in shots (18-7) and corner kicks (9-3). Two of the four goals were scored on corner kicks.
Idaho was led by Maria Madeira with two shots. Four of the seven Vandal shots were on goal.
"We need to control the ball better and we need to take our opportunities when we get them. That is the difference right now. I can't fault the effort and the work rate of the players and we miss come around soon," Showler said.
The Vandals play their first home game of the season Friday (Sept. 8) at 3 p.m. vs. Sacramento State. The team then hits the road again to take on San Diego, Sunday, at 1 p.m.
