Vandals turn in solid performance

MOSCOW, Idaho- The Idaho swimming and diving team battled hard Saturday but fell 127-103 to Oregon State in a home dual.

"For us to even come close to Oregon State shows that our team is headed the right direction," swimming coach Tom Jager said. "We are pleased about this, we had some great swims."

Idaho had multiple standouts in the pool Saturday. Freshman Kaela Pettitt continued her trend of strong swimming by dominating the 1000-yard Freestyle with a time of 10:31.17. Fellow freshman Kelsey Saxe swam a fabulous race on her way to setting a school record in the 200 yard Individual medley. Saxe finished the race in 2:09.30.

"Kelsey is a great swimmer and keeps getting better everyday," Jager said.

Idaho made a statement in the 100-yard freestyle with junior Alyson O'Brien and sophomore Si Jia Pang finishing one-two with times of 52.80 and 53.60, respectively.

Senior Amanda Morrow led the Vandal diving team by winning both the one-meter and the three-meter events, while freshman Rachel Klancher finished second in both events.

Idaho competed hard against the Beavers of the Pac-10, but according to Jager the turning point meet in the 50-yard freestyle.

"We were one, two, three, in the 50-yard freestyle up until the last couple strokes," Jager said. "They ended up winning that event, and that was the difference in the meet."

Jager also was impressed with his 400-yard freestyle relay team composed of Alyson O'Brien, Si Jia Pang, Katie Hendricks and Treasa Ring, all of whom are underclassmen. The team swam a season-best 3:30.83, which is nearly three seconds faster than its previous best.

After swimming their last three meets away from Moscow, the Vandals enjoyed what Jager called "home cooking" in swimming in front of a home crowd. He felt that the atmosphere was great, and he hopes his young team can build off of this experience.

"If we swam like this against Boise State, it is a totally different meet, but we are a young team and need to learn to handle the pressures of the road," he said.

Idaho looks to improve on its performance when it takes on rival Washington State on next Saturday at 11 a.m.
