BOISE, Idaho - The University of Idaho women's soccer team battled Boise State to a scoreless regulation, but the Broncos struck in the first minute of overtime to take a 1-0 win on Sunday.
BSU's Ebie Harris found the net just 43 seconds into the extra period for the game-winner on a cross from Katy Oehring. With the setback, Idaho slips to 13-5 overall and 4-2 in Western Athletic Conference play, while Boise State moves to 7-8-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference.
"With the conditions the way they were," Idaho head coach Pete Showler said of the cold, rainy weather. "BSU played a style of game that gave us trouble, but we responded and we handled it. It was just disappointing for the girls who put in so much work to lose it that way."
Idaho was outshot by a 29-13 overall margin and 11-6 in on-target attempts. Junior goalkeeper made 10 saves and allowed the one goal in 90:43. Sophomore midfielder Megan Lopez led Idaho with five shots, while sophomore forward Chelsea Small had four.
The result was bittersweet for the Vandal women, because despite the loss, Idaho still retained the Governor's Cup title by virtue of its three points from its regulation 2-1 win over Idaho State on Sept. 3. BSU earned two points for Sunday's overtime victory.
The Broncos had six corner kicks to Idaho's five. The Vandals were whistled for 12 fouls, while BSU had 10, including a yellow card on Lauren Hickok in the ninth minute.
Small's fourth shot of the game gives her 102 so far this season and breaks her school record of 101, which she set last season as a freshman. Her 203 career shot attempts already rank second all-time at Idaho.
The Vandal women return home this week for its final two home matches of the year at Guy Wicks Field. Idaho will host San Jose State on Thursday at 3 p.m. (PT) before the team's Senior Day game against Fresno State on Sunday at 12 p.m.
