Vandals can't overcome turnovers

EUGENE, Ore. - The Idaho women's basketball team got off to a strong start against the Oregon Ducks on Friday morning, but a barrage of turnovers and cold shooting led to a 74-48 Oregon win, giving the 3-1 Vandals their first loss of the season.

While Idaho held Oregon to 34.5 percent (30-of-87) shooting from the field, the Vandals turned the ball of 30 times, leading to 23 Oregon points, and hit only 33.3 percent (18-of-54) of their shots.

The Ducks out-rebounded Idaho 53-41, including a 23-6 advantage on the offensive glass, which gave Oregon a 12-4 edge in second chance points. The Ducks improve to 4-0 on the season.

The Vandals scored the first points of the game on a 3-pointer from Shaena Kuehu, and wouldn't trail until Oregon took a 14-13 lead midway through the first half. The Vandals would tie the game at 17-17, but after the Ducks took a 20-17 lead with just over six minutes to play in the first half, they would not relinquish the lead. Oregon led 30-22 at halftime, and after a 9-0 run early in the second half, the Ducks would lead comfortably the rest of the way.

Derisa Taleni finished with eight points, seven rebounds and two assists for the Vandals, but also committed nine turnovers. Yinka Olorunnife had nine points and four rebounds in the game. Ganeaya Rogers made her first career start, and finished with eight points, three rebounds, three steals and an assist.

Alyssa Charlston came off the bench to chip in with seven points, three rebounds and an assist, while Ashley Walters had eight blocks, four rebounds and two points in 20 minutes of play. Emily Doran had two points and one rebound for Idaho.

The Vandals will wrap up the Oregon Tournament with two more games in the next two days. Idaho will face Sacramento State on Saturday at noon, and take on Cal. State Bakersfield on Sunday at noon.
