Soccer prevails in double-OT

OGDEN, Utah - Freshman midfielder Christina Boddie notched a game-winner for the second match in a row and the University of Idaho women's soccer team outlasted Weber State by a 2-1 margin on Tuesday.

Idaho moves to 5-2-0 on the season with its fourth-straight win, while the Wildcats slip to 0-7-0. The 5-2-0 record through seven games is the best start in school history for the Vandals.

"The girls showed a lot of character today," Idaho head coach Pete Showler said. "They came out with some good fighting spirit, never gave up and got their just desserts."

Boddie, a freshman who scored her first career goal in the 2-1 win over South Dakota on Saturday, took a cross from sophomore Erica Hart and sent it to the left corner to end the game at the 104:25 mark in the second extra period.

"We did a good job of breaking that defense down when it mattered, to get good crosses in, and that's what Erica did," Showler said of the game-winner. "Christina just rose and powered the header into the corner. It was fantastic to see."

Freshman Nitalia Zuniga, who entered the game with a team-leading three assists on the year, got herself into the goal column after knocking in a corner from sophomore Lauren Layton just seconds before the end of the first half.

The game was as close as the score indicates. Weber State outshot Idaho 18-16 overall and 7-6 in on-target shots, but Idaho didn't allow a shot in the overtime period. Idaho had six saves, compared to four for Weber State, while the Vandals held a 7-4 margin in corner kicks. The teams combined for just seven total fouls.

"The girls really came out with a great attitude and battled everywhere," Showler said. "It was a top-notch performance all around."

Weber State got on board first at the 16:41 mark after a score by Felicia Sortor put Idaho in a 1-0 hole. Idaho's come-from-behind win was its first since a 3-1 win over Boise State on Oct. 18, 2009.

Layton's assist gives her six for her career and moves her into a tie for seventh all-time at Idaho in the category. Hart's assist was the first of her career.

The game was delayed for 33 minutes in the second half after lightning struck in the area.

With its fourth-straight win, Idaho's women tie a single-season school record for consecutive wins. Idaho won five straight games between the end of 2001 and the start of the 2002 seasons, but has never won five games in a row. The longest unbeaten streak in school history is a 4-0-1 stretch to start the 1999 season.

Idaho will look to extend that streak on Friday, when the Vandals host Gonzaga in their home opener at Guy Wicks Field at 4 p.m. (PT).
