MOSCOW, Idaho - The Idaho women's basketball team knew it had a tough task ahead of it when defending Western Athletic Conference champion Fresno State rolled into the Cowan Spectrum with a 19-game WAC winning streak.
And for the first 30 minutes of the game, the Vandals were up to the challenge. But an 18-0 Fresno State run turned a 52-51 Idaho lead into a 69-52 deficit that the Vandals could not overcome, as the Bulldogs topped Idaho 84-67 on Monday night.
"I thought our start was great, we got out and we were communicating, we were playing good defense, getting good shots, getting to the rim," Idaho coach Jon Newlee said. "We got tired and our transition defense went bad. We stopped communicating defensively and gave up some wide open looks, some layups in transition, and the drive and kick, which is their game."
Fresno State hit 18-of-34 3-pointers, including 8-of-15 from Jaleesa Ross, who led all scorers with 28 points. The loss drops the Vandals to 8-6 on the season, and 1-1 in WAC play, while Fresno State improves to 11-5 and 2-0 in the WAC.
"At the start of the second half, we were right there, and then all of the sudden they go on their run," Newlee said. "They're a very explosive team, obviously we know they're going to shoot 3's coming in. 18-for-34, that's their game, and we allowed them to play their game."
Idaho was led by 18 points from junior Keri Arendse, who hit 8-of-9 shots in the game, and added three rebounds and a steal. Yinka Olorunnife had her seventh double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while adding two assists and three steals. Derisa Taleni had 10 points, six rebounds and six assists for Idaho, and Bianca Cheever had 10 points and five boards.
The Vandals shot 42.4 percent from the field for the game, hitting 25-of-59 shots, but made only 3-of-14 3's. The Vandals committed just 13 turnovers in the game.
Fresno State held a slim 36-35 rebounding advantage in the game, and shot 43.9 percent (29-of-66) for the game, including 52.9 percent from long range, and turned the ball over 14 times.
The Vandals got off to a quick 7-0 lead start to open the game, and built a 17-6 lead with 11 and a half minutes to play in the first half. But four consecutive 3-pointers for the Bulldogs gave Fresno State a quick 12-0 run and an 18-17 lead. The Bulldogs would lead by as many as eight in the first half before Idaho battled back to tie the score 32-32 at the break.
Arendse hit three straight shots to open the second half with a 6-0 Idaho run, giving the Vandals a 38-32 advantage, but the Bulldogs continued to answer with 3-point buckets, hitting back-to-back 3's to give Fresno State a 40-38 edge.
Idaho took its final lead of the game, 52-51, on a layup by Arendse, before Fresno State went on its decisive 18-0 run. It was Idaho's first home loss of the season.
Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins was ejected from the game with 4.1 seconds remaining in the first half after being hit with back-to-back technical fouls.
The Vandals return to action on Jan. 13 when Hawai'i visits the Cowan Spectrum. Tipoff of that game is at 6 p.m.
