MOSCOW, Idaho - Freshman Shan Lim and sophomore Paige Hunt both won twice but the Boise State Broncos dominated the remainder of the Saturday meet with the University of Idaho with a 160-83 Western Athletic Conference victory at the UI Swim Center.
Hunt opened the meet by winning the 3-meter diving with a personal best 275.95 to win by more than 11 points over BSU's Ciera Cortney. Hunt also won the 1-meter competition with a 241.40.
Lim's victories came in the 50 free and 200 back. She edged BSU's Stephanie North by .03 to win the 50 free in 23.97 - just .03 off her personal best at Idaho. Her victory in the 200 backstroke was considerably more decisive. She won in a personal best 2:04.43 to the 2:08.03 by BSU's Denise Green.
The Vandals are a freshmen dominated team and hadn't competed in seven weeks. Neither, coach Tom Jager said, was an excuse for the lop-sidedness of Saturday's meet.
"We're not happy," he said. "We're a little frustrated. ... They learned a lot today. They need to be more resilient."
He said the hype of taking on a team that not only is its in-state rival but is the reigning league champ might have worn on the psyche of the young Vandals.
"Swimming can be a real tricky sport," he said. "If you get too fired up, it might not be the best."
Saturday's meet was Idaho's final home competition. The Vandals finish the regular season on the road at Oregon State (Jan. 29) and Washington State (Feb. 5) before the Feb. 23-26 WAC Championship Meet at San Antonio, Texas.
