Honorable Mention All-America

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its 2012 outdoor All-America honorees on Tuesday and recognized Idaho's Mike Marshall as an Honorable Mention selection.

Marshall, a junior from Yakima, Wash., earned the All-America Honorable Mention accolade in the men's javelin throw after finishing 17th at last week's NCAA Outdoor Championships in the event with a throw of 224-9 (68.52m).

The honor is the first of Marshall's career and the third for a Vandal track and field athlete this year after sophomore Hannah Kiser (women's 3000m) and senior Jeremy Klas (men's pole vault) each earned Second Team honors during the indoor season.

Marshall, a former walk-on, finished the year ranked third all-time at Idaho with a best mark of 230-6 (70.26m) in the javelin throw. He won the Western Athletic Conference title in the event to help lead the Vandal men to a WAC team title. He is the first Vandal to earn All-America honors in the event since Oscar Duncan did so three years in a row from 1996-98.

Marshall's selection makes him the 28th Vandal man to earn an All-America accolade in outdoor track and field and the third to do so in the javelin throw.

The USTFCCCA annually awards All-America honors in cross country and indoor/outdoor track and field. Starting in 2011, the organization awarded First-Team All-America honors to those athletes who finish first through eighth place or score a team point, Second-Team honors to ninth through 16th places and Honorable Mention notation to those who participate and finished lower than 16th.
