CEDAR CITY, Utah – The University of Idaho Women's soccer team played to a 2-2 double overtime draw with Southern Utah Friday evening at Thunderbird Soccer Field. The Vandals move to 2-9-1 on the season with the tie and 2-0-1 in Big Sky Conference play, while Southern Utah moves to 4-3-1 on the season and 2-0-1 in conference play.
The Vandals and Thunderbirds played to a scoreless first half, both teams scoring twice in the second half – but neither being able to score in either overtime period.
“I didn't think there was much created between the two teams,” head coach Derek Pittman said. “There were moments of momentum for both teams where chances were created, but in the end I fell that this was a fair result.”
Aurora Moberly scored the first goal of the game for SUU in the 57th minute tapping the ball into the goal from the six assisted by Christine Meehan.
The Vandals responded back in the 62nd minute after sophomore Kavita Battan was taken down in the box resulting in a Southern Utah penalty. Sophomore Elexis Schlossarek fired the penalty kick into the back of the net equalizing the game 1-1.
The Thunderbirds found the net again in the 71st minute taking the lead 2-1.
The Vandals quickly answered back five minutes later when freshman Chloe Bell hunted down the ball in the box after Battan beat the keeper to tie the game 2-2.
“We made a mistake on the first SUU goal and they capitalized on it,” Pittman said. “We still felt like we could create goal scoring chances if we kept going at them and I feel that the team showed resilience and belief in our game plan to create those two goals.”
The Thunderbirds held the edge on shots 18-9, while both teams took four corners.
Sophomore Torell Stewart recorded nine saves in the tie for the Vandals, while Alyssa Pease led in shots with two.
“Southern Utah is a good team that has a talented midfield group, so to come away with a point on the road is extremely valuable in the Big Sky standings,” Pittman said. “I'm very proud of our entire team and the fight they showed. Now we recover as much as possible and prepare for NAU.”
The Vandals continue Big Sky Conference action on Sunday when they host Northern Arizona at 1 p.m. PT.
The match is the Vandal Pride Spirit Contest – the organization with the most members present at the game showing off their Vandal pride will win some money! First place receives $300, second gets $150 and third place goes home with $50.
