Vandals Drop One on the Road

MORAGA, Calif – The University of Idaho soccer team gave up an early goal to Saint Mary's and couldn't get the offense going in a 3-0 loss Friday afternoon.

The Gaels (4-3-0) found the net early in the first-half on a low cross from Vicki Shimkus to Hannah Diaz, who chipped the ball into the goal in the 12th minute. Saint Mary's made another move on goal in the 35th minute with an assist from Shimkus and Diaz to Samantha Dion who knocked the ball into the back of the net from five yards out.

After the half, Saint Mary's kept their tempo and scored in the 49th minute with an assist from Diaz to Jessica Castillo who slid past the defender and fired the ball into the back of the net.

“Overall, Saint Mary's is a good team and they were able to spread us out in our shape and get their special players isolated one versus one with our defenders, this is how they scored all three goals,” head coach Derek Pittman said

Saint Mary's held a 30-7 shot advantage overall and 10-3 on target. The Gaaels had the edge on corner kicks with four to Idaho's three, while both teams were whistled for 12 fouls.

“We have to improve our team and individual defending to limit our opponent's chances on goal,” Pittman said. “We have to get our heads up and be more composed to punish teams in transition.”

Torell Stewart started her fifth game of the season in goal and made six saves in 90 minutes Sophomore Kavita Battan and junior Reagan Quigley led the team with two shots apiece, while Battan added two on goal as well.

“Our players gave their all and I'm very proud of their efforts,” Pittman stated. “Our extremely tough non-conference schedule is making us better for Big Sky play in two weeks.”

The Vandals are back in action at home on Sunday when they host Washington State. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. PT.
