MOSCOW, Idaho - Coach Paul Petrino and his staff stocked the cupboard with a bundle of Northwest talent as they not only gear up for the future of University of Idaho football but for today.
Idaho's haul on National Letter of Intent signing day includes four Idaho high schoolers and two prep stars out of Spokane. The Vandals added two more junior college transfers to the roster as well as a host of speedy player out of Florida and California - and another legacy player in linebacker Mike Linehan.
“I'm really happy about that,” said Petrino of Idaho's northwest signees. “We need to keep that going.”
The linemen coming in from the state of Idaho are Coeur d'Alene's Zion Dixon (Lake City High School), Pocatello's Tanner Mauseth (Century High School) and Meridian's Conner Vrba (Rocky Mountain High School). The Vandals also landed Cade Coffey, a punter/kicker from Rathdrum's Lakeland High School and the son of former Vandal defensive back Travis Coffey.
From Washington, Idaho added to the backfield with gifted running back Jack Bamis (Gonzaga Prep) and hardy fullback Jace Malek (West Valley High School).
As he likes to do, Petrino mined Florida where he found speed in receiver Jante Boston (Riboult High School, Jacksonville), defensive end Eric Hale (Lake Minneola High School, Orlando), safety Trenton McGhee (the Bolles High School, Jacksonville) and running back Calvary Pugh (Forest Hills High School, West Palm Beach).
The junior college players - defensive lineman Garren Jackson (Cerritos) and tight end Khalin Smith (Bakersfield), are Californians and are joined by high schoolers Denzal Brantley (running back, Los Alamitos), Kareem Coles (quarterback San Diego) and Darius Liles (linebacker, Visalia).
The lone Texas is Linehan, who joins his brother Matt (Idaho's starting quarterback) and dad, Scott, as well as uncles Ron and Rick as Vandals.
“In this day and age,” Petrino said, “you have to get speed. We really improved our speed. We've really got faster in the back end on defense. That's something we knew we had to do.
“To be a great program, it starts with the offensive line and quarterback. I'm really happy with the offensive linemen we got and the quarterback.”
