SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—The Vandal women's tennis team fell in a 4-3 bout with Cal Poly at Mustang Courts on Saturday afternoon. Idaho falls to 8-5 on the season with eight matches left before the Big Sky Tournament in late April.
Cal Poly opened the match drawing first blood, taking the doubles point to start the day. The Mustang duo of Dané Joubert and Louise Oxnevad defeated Idaho's No. 1 pairing of Galina Bykova and Emmie Marx, 4-6. The Vandals lost the point on the No. 3 court. Rita Bermudez and Lucia Badillos dropped their match to Molly Reed and Zoe Oedekerk, 3-6. The Vandals lone doubles win came at the hands of Belen Barcenilla and Sophie Vickers (6-3) in No. 2 play.
Singles play was spilt with Idaho and Cal Poly each winning three matches. The No. 5 court was the decisive match. Oedekerk slipped by Badillos in straight sets, 4-6, 3-6.
Bykova, Vickers and Barcenilla each won individual matches. Bykova improved to 9-2 in No. 1 play with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Oxnevad. Vickers extended her singles winning streak to six with a win over Hannah Stone, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 4 position. Barcenilla took care of business in the longest match of the day. She outlasted Joubert, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Idaho will remain in the Golden State for a match on Sunday at former Western Athletic Conference foe Fresno State. The match is set for 5 p.m. PT.
