PORTLAND, Ore.—The Vandal women's tennis team closed out the Big Sky season with a 6-1 win at Portland State on Saturday. Idaho finishes the conference season with a 10-1 record and will be the No. 2 seed entering the Big Sky Tournament.
“We wanted to be the second seed in the conference and the girls did a great job of making sure that happened,” head coach Mariana Cobra said following the win. “We handled adversity very well today, staying calm in the bigger moments. Overall, it was a great match for us to get ready for conference.”
The Vandals opened the scoring by taking the doubles point from the Vikings. Sophie Vickers paired with Belen Barcenilla to dispose of PSU's Tracy Dong and Sabina-Elena Dong by a score of 6-0 on the No. 2. The Idaho pair of Galina Bykova and Emmie Marx clinched the point for the Vandals on the No. 1 court, just ahead of Beatriz Flores and Lucia Badillos. Both pairs took their respective games, 6-4.
Idaho (13-7) opened singles play, taking the first two points. Barcenilla wrapped up the No. 5 court with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kelsey Frey. Bykova, after dropping the first set 1-6, strung together a pair of 6-2 wins to close out the No. 1 court. The win puts Bykova in strong consideration for Big Sky Player of the Year, finishing the conference season a perfect 11-0.
Portland State's lone point came at the No. 4 position. Rita Bermudez and Preda split the first two sets, 6-3, 3-6. Bermudez was not able to regain control, dropping the third set, 4-6.
The Silver and Gold clinched the win on the No. 6 court, behind the play of Badillos. The freshman defeated Alexa McDonald, 6-1, 6-0, putting the Vandals up 4-1 in the match. Marx and Vickers outlasted their opponents to win the two remaining points.
Idaho will be in Eugene, Ore. on Sunday to close the season. The match with the Ducks is set for an 11 a.m. PT start.
