MOSCOW, Idaho – It was an incredible game from start to finish, but Southern Utah (4-11, 2-3 BSC) took down Idaho (11-7, 3-2 BSC), 85-83, in overtime on Saturday night at the Cowan Spectrum.
“Well obviously we're very disappointed,” head coach Don Verlin said. “I thought Southern Utah dictated the tempo of the game. I thought they played harder than we did. They made the plays when they needed to.”
Idaho scored the first six points in the overtime frame, with Pat Ingram finishing the old fashioned 3-point play and Victor Sanders draining a corner 3-ball, but the Vandals went cold from there. Southern Utah reclaimed the lead midway through the extra period and held on for the remainder. Idaho had a chance in the closing seconds to force another OT, but Chad Sherwood's first free throw attempt with 0.1 seconds remaining went in-and-out.
The Vandals trailed for the majority of the contest, but never by more than six points. Trailing by three in the closing seconds of regulation, Idaho looked to Sanders who was fouled on a 3-pointer for the second time in the game. Sanders hit all three free throws and forced the overtime.
Sanders finished with a game-high 29 points, despite fouling out with 3:42 to play in overtime. He wasn't quite as efficient as he was on Thursday, but he was Idaho's biggest threat throughout the night.
Arkadiy Mkrtychyan had a solid evening, going 5-of-7 from the field and finishing with 12 points. He also grabbed five boards. Ingram, who had played sparingly for the majority of the season, played 26 quality minutes and finished with 11 points, five boards and two assists.
As a team, Idaho shot 46 percent (23-of-50) from the floor and 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from beyond the arc.
The loss is Idaho's first “close game” loss of the season. The Vandals had been 5-0 in games decided by five points or fewer.
