Vandals Thrash Fighting Hawks

Idaho dominates North Dakota, 5-1

MOSCOW, Idaho – It was another slow start for the Vandals, but Idaho (6-4-2, 3-1-0) turned things on in the second half to take the convincing 5-1 win over North Dakota (1-8-2, 0-3-0) on Sunday afternoon at Guy Wicks Field.

"I thought it was good.  It wasn't as sharp as we were against Northern Colorado, but I thought we went about our business the right way and we got the job done today," said head coach Derek Pittman.  "I thought we were very focused, I'm really happy with that.  Especially in the second half, we came out with the energy to get ourselves up by a few goals to finish things off."

The Vandals got the scoring started in the 29th minute.  Kavita Battan picked up the ball at midfield, turned and sped past her defender.  Battan put on another move to set up a better angle, then slid in a pass to a cutting Kayla Watanabe at the back post who finished on the open net.

Madison Moore doubled the lead in the 57th minute, scoring her first career goal.  Josilyn Daggs sent in the long throw toward the top of the box, finding a cutting Moore who tucked in a shot inside the far post.

"It has been a running joke lately with the defenders that they've all scored except for Madi," Pittman said.  "She's had a lot of chances, obviously the shot on Friday that bounced off the post and some others in the past that were great saves by the goalkeepers or unlucky bounces.  But she stuck with it and we kept giving her chances so for her to get her first goal today was awesome.  It definitely sparked us in the second half."

Battan got one for herself in the 62nd minute, burying a corner from Clara Gomez into the top of the net.  Elexis Schlossarek added one from the penalty spot in the 69th minute.

North Dakota would get one back on a corner kick late, but Idaho would respond almost immediately with a goal from Emma Eddy to make it 5-1.

Idaho dominated the game, outshooting North Dakota 36-7.  The Vandals kept the ball in the offensive end for most of the contest, allowing just one shot on goal.  The five goals are the most by a Vandals team since shutting out Nevada 5-0 on September 22, 2000.  It is just the fourth time in program history that the Vandals scored 5-plus goals, and just the third time against a Division I opponent.  Idaho had never scored more than four goals against a conference opponent.
