LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Idaho track and field opened up competition in Southern California on Saturday with a number of athletes setting personal-bests on the day.
Drew Thompson set a decathlon PR with 6296 points in the California Invite B group, taking seventh overall. Thompson finished in the top-five in three events, including setting a PR in the 100-meter dash at 11.37 seconds and taking fourth. He placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.08 seconds) and fifth in the high jump (1.92 meters), and also set an outdoor PR in the pole vault with a leap of 3..85 meters.
Kaleala Bass competed in her first collegiate heptathlon at the Mt. SAC Relays/California Invitational. Bass set personal-bests in the 800-meters (2:24.29) and the high jump (1.48 meters) along the way.
Nathan Stark also had a tremendous performance at the Mt. SAC Relays, taking 10th among a tremendous field in the 3000-meter steepelechase with a career-best time of 9:05.58, the ninth fastest time in Idaho history.
At the Beach Pacific Coast Dusan Jevtic won the high jump competition with a leap of 1.95 meters. Arphaxad Carroll took the top spot in the long jump at 7.42 meters, a career-best and the best leap in the Big Sky so far this season.
Andrea Pikes earned second in the women's 100-meter dash with a career-best time of 12.08 seconds, while Ben Ayesu-Attah took fifth in the men's 200-meters at 21.79 seconds. Derek Haas placed sixth in the javelin with a throw of 60.63 meters.
At the Cal State LA Twilight Open Katelyn Peterson took third in the high jump at 1.65 meters, competing in her first meet of the season. Lauren Cooper placed eighth in the hammer throw with a career-best toss of 47.20 meters, while Tayler Feinauer's throw of 38.24 meters in the javelin throw was good enough for fifth.
On the men's side, Matthew Pete Bauman earned sixth in the hammer throw with a career-best throw of 48.66 meters, winning his flight.
