@VandalsSoccer Earns Draw

Fantastic performance from Stewart earns tie against Saint Mary’s

WAIPAHU, Hawaii – Another game another fantastic performance from Torell Stewart, as Idaho (1-2-2) drew with Saint Mary's (0-5-1), 0-0, on Sunday afternoon.  The senior goalkeeper made eight saves on the day, none bigger than a breakaway save in the closing seconds to keep the draw.

"I'm hoping this weekend was an eye-opening weekend for her," said head coach Derek Pittman.  "She really stepped up and played fantastic against Hawaii with some massive saves, and also today.  Made two or three big saves to keep Saint Mary's at bay and keep them scoreless.  Really happy with her steps forward leading the back line and keeping us organized and doing the things she needed to do to keep the shutout."

Stewart was called upon many times on the day, including the great save to close out regulation.  With about 30 seconds remaining, Saint Mary's Hannah Diaz came screaming down the left side unmarked, but Stewart was quick off her line to control the angle and made her biggest save of the game.

"I thought our players fought very, very hard through some difficult conditions at times," Pittman said.  "Obviously the delay early on and the weather we had during the game.  They made the necessary adjustments.  Saint Mary's is very good team.  They have a lot of dynamic players up front and I thought our team really stood up tall across the back line.  It was a total team effort to get the first shutout of the season.  Overall really happy with the way we played today, we definitely took a step forward today."

Kavita Battan was tremendous in the second half as well.  She had a great opportunity in the 71st minute, after the Saint Mary's keeper made an errant touch she pounced and took a shot but the keeper made a sprawling save to keep the game scoreless.

The Vandals dominated the final five minutes of regulation, beginning with a free kick from the foot of Olivia Baggerly from about 35 yards out.  The keeper looked to make a simple save but bobbled the ball to the top of the six-yard box.  Clara Gomez took enough control to get a shot on target, but the keeper stood tall again.

The final opportunity of regulation came in the closing seconds, with Battan stealing the ball about 20 yards from the corner flag.  She took a couple touches and sent in a great cross to the leaping Kayla Watanabe, but her header went just wide to the far post.

Idaho's best chances in the first half came in the 34th minute.  Battan broke in past the defense on the right flank before cutting back in and sending in a low cross to Watanabe.  Watanabe got a good touch on the ball, beating the keeper, but her shot missed the far post by inches and dribble wide.  Moments later, the same duo combined again.  This time Watanabe received the ball from Battan on the outside of the box and, after a nifty move toward the middle of the field, sent in a curling ball that went just wide.

Three Vandals earned all-tournament honors, led by Stewart.  Kelly Dopke and Megan Goo also earned recognition after playing well all weekend.
