POCATELLO, Idaho—Idaho men's tennis kicked off the 2017 fall season at the Idaho State Bank of Commerce Tournament over the weekend.

The Vandals had strong double performances in the tournament and had some positive singles results as well.

Mark Kovacs and Carlos Longhi Neto played as the top-ranked doubles pairing in the field. The doubles tournament started on Thursday with the pair getting a first-round bye. The duo scored an 8-5 win over Boise State's Tim Heslin and Harvey Shackleton. The Idaho pair advanced to the semifinals with its 8-3 win over Southern Utah's Jonathan Morales and Conor Tordoff. The Vandal pair fought in the semifinals but fell to the eventual champions, Montana's Alexander Canellopoulos and Yannick Schmidl, 8-6.

The Vandals had a second doubles pairing advance to the semifinals. Esteban Santibanez  and Lucas Coutinho were seeded sixth in the tournament. The pair opened with an 8-5 win over Montana State's Marcos Zelver and Joaquim Espinoza. They scored a second 8-5 win in the round of 16 against Montana's Ludvig Hallgren and Max Korkh. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Alexander Flink and Rok Sitar of Montana State, 8-7(4). The pair got ousted in the semifinals against Weber State's Kris Van Wyk and Stefan Cooper.

Kovacs continued his strong play in singles action. Ranked third overall in the tournament, he went 3-1 in the advancing to the semifinals. Kovacs picked up wins over players from Idaho State, Southern Utah and Montana to advance. He would end up falling 6-2, 6-4, to Jose Fernando Carvajal of Utah State in the semifinals.

Sophomore Guilherme Scarpelli had a good start to his season. He went 2-1, advancing to the quarterfinals before getting ousted. He opened with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Montana's Nacho Tejerino. He won 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals. Scarpelli met his match in Weber State's Cooper, falling 6-4, 6-2.
