Idaho women's swimming and diving will conclude its season-opening road swing this weekend with two meets in Arizona. The Vandals (2-4) take on Grand Canyon Friday, before facing Northern Arizona Saturday. Both opponents are fellow members of the Western Athletic Conference. The Vandals open their home slate Nov. 10, against New Mexico State.
FAST OUT OF THE GATE: Freshman
Emma Schlyter has been one of Idaho's top performers early on in the season. Schlyter enters the weekend ranked fourth in the Western Athletic Conference in the 200-yard freestyle after clocking a season-best time of 1:53.43 last week. A native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Schlyter competed at the 2017 Canadian Junior Championships prior to arriving in Moscow. She advanced to five finals at the meet, including top-seven finishes in the 200-meter freestyle and 400-meter individual medley events.
ABOUT GRAND CANYON: The Lopes will open their new home pool Friday, when the Vandals come to town. Grand Canyon will begin competing at the brand new Fr. Edward J. Reese Aquatic Center on the campus of Brophy Catholic College Preparatory. This is the first season GCU is eligible to compete at the NCAA Championships after transitioning to Division I athletics. The Lopes finished fourth last season at the WAC Championships, 35 points behind Idaho. GCU features the conference's top two individuals in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events entering the weekend.
ABOUT NORTHERN ARIZONA: The four-time defending WAC Champion Lumberjacks will be celebrating Senior Day Saturday, at the NAU Aquatic and Tennis Complex. This will mark Idaho's first trip to the new facility that opened in February 2016. The Vandals were the last team to face NAU at their previous home, the Wall Aquatic Center. The Lumberjacks have defeated Idaho the last four seasons. Idaho has never won in Flagstaff, which sits at an elevation of 7,000 feet.
