HOUSTON - The University of Idaho is still second after the second day of the Western Athletic Conference meet.
"Today was a really good day," Coach Mark Sowa said. "Our divers were tremendous putting up 49 points all together in the one-meter, and our 500s was a strong start to the day. Our relay put a finishing touch on our day. Overall, we really like where things are but we still have a lot to do and a long way to go."
Idaho is second with 242 points - just 42 points behind second-day leader Northern Arizona.
On day two, the day started with the 500 freestyle where three Vandals advanced to the final. Leah Fisk made the top eight in the prelims with a time of 4:54.52, which is a new Idaho record, before coming back to finish sixth with a time of 4:56.41. Erica King and Sarah Hall made consolation final with King swimming a 4:59.61 and finishing in 11th, and Hall taking 13th with a 4:59.77.
Three Vandals advanced into the top eight tonight in the 200 individual medley with Sophomore Clothilde Peseux placing fifth with a time of 2:04.15, Freshman Dhani Freeland (2:05.95) in seventh, and Junior Cara Jernigan (2:06.20) in eighth place. Emily Kliewer advanced into the consolation final from her prelim swim and finished 14th overall with a time of 2:05.67.
In the 50 freestyle, Maryann Kok made consolations from her prelim swim and finished 15th tonight in final with a time of 23.97.
The last swimming event of the night was the 200 freestyle relay with the team of Maryann Kok, Aileen Pannecoucke, Emily Kliewer, and Leah Fisk finishing in fifth place overall.
On the diving side of the competition, five Vandals advanced into the one-meter diving final. Of those divers, three of them placed in the top eight. Those divers were Janelle Lucas with a score of 251.95 in fourth, Hailey Kessler (250.80) in fifth, and Nikki Imanaka (244.20) in sixth. Indiya Williams and Emi Smith advanced into consolation finals with Williams finishing in 13th, and Smith in 14th.
