SPOKANE, Wash. – The Vandals are out to a great start at the 2017 Sam Adams Invitational, hosted by Whitworth on Thursday. Several Vandals earned top-five finishes on the opening day of competition.
Two Vandals shined in the 5k, led by
Sierra Speiker in second at 17:51.76.
McCall Skay earned fifth with a time of 18:38.55, a time that would be the seventh best in the conference this season.
Kolcie Bates also earned a second-place finish, in the hammer throw. She went 53.56 meters (175-09), a new personal best.
Silke Berendse had a pair of top-five finishes in her first collegiate heptathlon. She finished fourth in the 200-meters with a time of 26.62 and earned fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.46 meters.
On the men's side a pair of athletes battled in the top-three in the 5k.
Grayson Ollar finished in a close second in his first outdoor 5k with a time of 15:05.81, while teammate
Dwain Stucker posted an outdoor personal best to finish third at 15:08.21.
Austin Beyer took fourth in the javelin at 57.28 meters (187-11), also the second best throw in the Big Sky to date. Matthew Pete Bauman finished fifth in the hammer throw at 51.95 meters (170-05), good enough for the seventh best throw in the conference this season.
Competition concludes on Friday.
