MOSCOW, Idaho—The Vandal volleyball team was back in Memorial Gym on Wednesday, fresh of its first spring tune-up last weekend. The Vandals split the Saturday series in Spokane with a win over Gonzaga and a tight battle against Washington State.
Idaho is back to playing with a full, healthy squad, a luxury that has not presented itself in recent memory. The Vandals are able to play full rotations on both sides of the net, with all 14 players on the current roster at 100 percent.
"We have 13 to 14 kids in the gym right now," head coach
Debbie Buchanan pointed out. "We are able to rest kids when we need to. Torri [Crawford] is staying really strong with her ab. We are keeping Kaela's [Straw] foot under control. We got Haylee [Mathis] back a lot sooner than we thought. All of those are really positive things."
The Vandals only lost one player to graduation in 2016.
Terra Varney vacates the libero position, leaving opportunities for defensive specialists like
Klaree Hobart,
Tara Eaton and
Maura Donovan to step in and make an impact.
Sarah Sharp returns as Idaho's top offensive threat, entering her junior season. Last season she led the Vandals with 3.02 kills per set.
Kaela Straw and
Torrin Crawford both figure to play a key role in the Vandal offense this season as well.
Idaho will return to action on April 15. The Vandals will host Washington State along with other regional opponents in the first of two fall dates set for Memorial Gym.
