Vandals honored

COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho – The University of Idaho football team was recognized Saturday night for its 2016 season with co-Coach of the Year, co-College (male) Team of the Year, and co-Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year at the North Idaho Sports Banquet.

Paul Petrino turned the Vandals into a bowl championship team in his fourth season as head coach when Idaho won the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl over Colorado State. He shares the award with Lewis-Clark State College baseball coach Jeremiah Robbins, who guided the Warriors to the NAIA National Championship.

The Vandals, who also share the team award with the Warriors, won the FIPB to move their all-time bowl record to 3-0 after the entertaining 61-50 victory capped a 9-4 record.

Austin Rehkow, Idaho's four-year starter at kicker and punter, shares the Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year award with North Idaho College basketball player Sam Dowd. Rehkow, an All-American and East-West Shrine Game participant for the Vandals as well as a finalist for the Ray Guy and Lou Groza Awards, leaves Idaho with every placekicking and punting record.

Two more Vandals were honored at the annual banquet. Tom Hennessey, a linebacker for the Vandals who still holds the record for single-season tackles, was inducted into the Idaho Sports Hall of Fame along with former Vandal quarterback and current Dallas Cowboys' assistant Scott Linehan.
