MOSCOW, Idaho – The Cawleys, director of track and field/cross country
Tim Cawley and assistant coach
Cathleen Cawley, continue to give back to the track and field community as coaches with Team USA this summer.
Cathleen Cawley spent some time in Lima, Peru, working with the combined events athletes at the 2017 Pan American Junior Championships. She's no stranger to representing Team USA, as she also served as the women's team manager at the 2015 Senior Area Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Tim Cawley is currently in London preparing for the 2017 IAAF World Outdoor Championshis, where he'll work as an assistant coach on the women's side, focusing on the jumps. Again, he is also very familiar with Team USA, most recently serving as the head women's coach at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships.
"It's an honor, it's an extreme honor to be on it,"
Tim Cawley said. "It's a neat opportunity to be around the best in the world and try to help put them in an environment or situation where they have their best chance."
The experience with Team USA has also had a major impact on the Cawleys, and the Idaho track and field/cross country program.
"We have a mission statement here, 'to create and foster an environment that thrives in excellence and character, academics and athletics, by enjoying the process in a positive and collaborative environment,'" said
Tim Cawley. "The majority of that came from experience, but a lot of it has come from Cathleen and I traveling around to the Olympics and the World Championships and events like this, when you're around the best of the best.
"Usually the difference, other than the God-given athletic ability that you have to have a certain level of, but the difference between the medalists and the others is usually their character. Usually when you're talking to them they're pushing their minds as much as their bodies. You can tell. Usually those athletes that are consistently winning medals and doing those things, it's not just talent. They keep things very positive, their perspective on things is incredible. When you see that, you can see it so highly focused. We took a lot from that and tried to incorporate that with the program here. And part of that is that we look for athletes that instill some of that to start with, and then we're always striving for excellence in those areas."
A number of athletes, both current and former, will also be competing in the IAAF World Outdoor Championships. Check back with GoVandals.com for the full breakdown of competing athletes.
