MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho got back to its old ways on Friday night, defeating Hawaii, 1-0, in the Kibbie Dome. The Vandals peppered the net all night, firing 20 shots to just seven by the Rainbow Wahine.
"Really proud of our players," said head coach
Derek Pittman. "From the opening whistle I thought they came out and really put Hawaii under a ton of pressure. With the way Hawaii plays we didn't want to give them a whole lot of time on the ball and I think we did a great job disrupting what they were trying to accomplish."
Olivia Baggerly broke the deadlock in the 75
th minute.
Morgan Crosby sent in a perfect ball on a corner kick, with
Kelly Dopke cutting to the back post to redirect the cross toward the middle. Baggerly was there waiting, heading the ball in for her first of the season.
Makayla Presgrave earned her second shutout of the season, making five saves on the night. She was called on a number of times, mostly in the second half, as Hawaii pressed to try to level the score. The Idaho defense held strong all night, as the unit continues to build chemistry just three weeks into the regular season.
The starting forward pairing of
Myah Merino and
Bridget Daley were strong all night. The duo took eight of Idaho's 20 shots on the night, and opened up the Hawaii defense with their speed through the back line.
