ST. MORITZ, Switzerland – Former track and field athlete Sam Michener has been selected by USA Bobsled and Skeleton to compete in the upcoming Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, in February.

The United States qualified three teams for the both the two-man and four-man bobsled competitions, with qualifications wrapping up over the weekend.  Michener will be joined by Nick Cunningham, Hakeem Abdul-Saboor and Christopher Kinney.

Michener's career took off in during the 2012-13 season, where he took a handful of first place finishes in his first season.  He began competing with Cunningham in 2014-15.

At Idaho, Michener was a member of the Idaho track and field team from 2006 through 2010.  He capped off his career by taking home All-WAC honors at the 2010 WAC Outdoor Championships after finishing third in the 100-meters with a personal best time of 10.61 seconds.

The Vandals are no stranger to the bobsled competition at the Olympics.  Idaho's Chris Stokes competed for Jamaica at the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, a team that was later immortalized in the film "Cool Runnings."  Stokes would go on to compete for Jamaica three more times.  Former Vandal Gregory Sun also competed in the bobsled, for Trinidad and Tobago at the 1994, 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympics.  Sun was selected to carry his nation's flag at the 1994 Opening Ceremonies, the first person from Trinidad and Tobago to ever do so at a Winter Olympic Games.

Sun was also instrumental in getting Michener into a bobsled, encouraging the former Vandals to make the change.

The Vandals were well represented at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio, with Kristin Armstrong earning her third straight Olympic Gold Medal in the women's individual time trial and Angela Whyte competing for Team Canada in the 100-meter hurdles.
