VALENTINE, Neb. - Another balanced effort moved Idaho men's golf up the leaderboard Monday, in the second round of the Jackrabbit Invitational. The Vandals shot 2-over as a team and jumped to third place at 8-over (294-290=584).
Sean Langham was Idaho's low scorer at 1-under (71), followed immediately by
Enrique Marin and
Colt Sherrell, each shooting even-par 72. Idaho will tee off Tuesday's final round at 8:30 a.m. CT from the first hole at The Prairie Club.
"We felt pretty good about today," said head coach
David Nuhn. "Sean and Colt really stepped up for us. Sean was very consistent all day and Colt put together a great back nine to finish strong."
Sherrell posted four birdies and shot 3-under on the back nine to shoot even par, his best score to par as a collegiate golfer. Langham also had his best round as a Vandal, thanks in part to three birdies on the back nine after carding nine consecutive pars on the front.
Langham is tied for 12th, but Marin still leads the Idaho contingent at 1-under for the tournament and tied for eighth. The senior recorded five birdies for the second consecutive day, but suffered a double bogey on the par-five 10th.
"We're still looking to hit the right spots around the greens and searching to eliminate three putt," Nuhn said. "Moving into third place was really nice to see. I think we're going to have to shoot under par tomorrow to maintain our placement, so I'll be looking for four good scores and hopefully a couple of red numbers. We're going to get after it and try to beat some of these good teams."
Idaho leaped over Missouri and Missouri State in the second round and will look to build on the slim advantage in the final round. The Vandals are one shot ahead of Missouri and two shots clear of Missouri State. Tournament-host South Dakota State is also in the hunt, five strokes behind Idaho, after shooting a 1-over 289 in the second round. The Vandals' 290 Monday, was the fourth-best score in the field.
