Idaho women's swimming and diving hosts Boise State in the 2018-19 season opener for both teams. The meet will start at 2:30 p.m. PT Saturday, at the U of I Swim Center.
Â
ABOUT THE VANDALS: Idaho is led by 10 seniors, including defending Western Athletic Conference champions
Leah Fisk (200 freestyle) and
Janelle Lucas (platform diving). In all, the Vandals return 20 from last year's team that finished third at the WAC Championships. It was Idaho's third top-three conference finish since the program was reinstated in 2004, all of which have come in the last five seasons under the direction of eighth-year head coach
Mark Sowa.
Â
ABOUT BOISE STATE: This is the Broncos' first meet of the 2018-19 season. Boise State is the two-time defending Mountain West Conference Champion, but the Broncos are under the direction of first-year head coach Christine Mabile.
Â
COMPETITION IN DIVING: The Vandals traveled to Boise State during the first weekend of the season last year, where the Broncos came away with a 167-122 victory. Idaho's divers led the way.
Janelle Lucas captured a win and a zone-qualifying score on three-meter, while taking second on one-meter.
Â
LUCAS LOOKING FOR HISTORY: Senior
Janelle Lucas is already the only diver in WAC history to win three consecutive platform titles. Lucas will look to become the first four-time champion in the event this season.
Â
FISK FINDS HER STROKE: Leah Fisk scored 49 individual points at the 2018 WAC Championships, the fifth most by a Vandal at a conference meet in program history. Fisk won the conference title in the 200-yard freestyle, claiming Idaho's first individual swimming crown since 2015 and its 12th since the program was reinstated in 2004. The Mercer Island, Wash., native also took third in the 100-yard freestyle – Idaho's best finish in the event at a conference meet since the program was reinstated – and sixth in the 500-yard freestyle.
Â
LOOKING AHEAD: The Vandals continue a season-opening, four-meet home stand next week when they host Washington State for a dual meet at the U of I Swim Center Saturday, Oct. 20, as part of Homecoming Week. Competition is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m.
