Â
ABOUT IDAHO STATE: The Bengals are off to a 3-1 start, 2-0 in Big Sky play, and receiving votes in both national polls. Idaho State's offense is led by current Big Sky Player of the Week, running back James Madison, who ranks third nationally with seven rushing touchdowns. The Bengal defense has forced 11 turnovers and scored two touchdowns of its own.
All-Time Series: Idaho leads 27-11. The Vandals are 12-6 on the road in the series.
Â
BATTLE OF THE DOMES: Saturday's game marks the first time football has counted as part of the Idaho Central Credit Union Battle of the Domes Series. The yearlong competition pits Idaho and Idaho State against each other in football, men's and women's basketball, women's soccer and women's volleyball. Each head-to-head competition carries a point value for the winning team. The athletic department that earns the most points at the end of the academic year will be awarded the Battle of the Domes traveling trophy and a donation to their scholarship fund from ICCU. Idaho State won last season's series.
Â
SOFT HANDS: Redshirt junior wide receiver
Jeff Cotton has caught four touchdown passes this season, ranking second in the Big Sky and 14th nationally. Cotton has hauled in a touchdown reception in each of Idaho's first four games of the year, becoming the first Vandal to do so since Josh McCain in 2014. The last time a Vandal caught a touchdown in each of the team's first five games was Josh Jelmberg in 2002. McCain finished the 2014 season with nine touchdowns and Jelmberg grabbed eight in 2002. Cotton has 15 catches for 248 yards this season, his debut campaign with Idaho after transferring from a junior college and redshirting in 2017.
Â
SINGLE DIGITS: Idaho defeated Portland State 20-7 Saturday, for its first Big Sky win of the season. Idaho led 20-0 at halftime, before the Vikings scored a touchdown on their first possession of the second half. The Vandal defense kept Portland State off the scoreboard the rest of the way. It was the first time Idaho held a conference opponent to single-digit scoring since 2010 and the fourth time since 1993. It marked the second time the Vandals have held any opponent to fewer than 10 points under head coach
Paul Petrino.
Â
PRESEASON ACCOLADES: Three Vandals landed on the Big Sky Preseason All-Conference Team, as voted on by select media members who cover the league.
Cade Coffey (punter),
Kaden Elliss (linebacker) and
Noah Johnson (offensive guard) each earned spots on the 31-player all-league team. The same trio was named to Phil Steele's Preseason All-America Team, including Johnson getting a first-team nod. He and Elliss were also named preseason All-Americans by STATS.
