Vandals Prevail in Four-Set Thriller

MOSCOW, Idaho— Idaho women's volleyball improved to 8-2 in Big Sky action, prevailing over Northern Colorado (5-4) in four-setter on Friday night at Memorial Gym.

First Set Summary
A kill from DeVonne Ryter gave Idaho a 10-5 lead and helped Idaho overtake UNC early in the opening set. The Bears would come within three points, but the Vandals used a 4-0 run with two straight kills from Reece Carman to extend the lead to 15-8. Idaho gave up eight more points to UNC before taking the set 25-16.

Second Set Summary
After back-and-forth points for both teams, Idaho took the lead in the second set at 8-7 with a kill by Sarah Sharp. The set would continue to see both sides battle for the lead as there were three lead changes before a tied set at 15-15. A Ryter and Haylee Mathis block lifted Idaho to a one-point lead, however, that lead was short-lived. With the score tied at 22-22, the Bears rallied late to take set two, 25-23.

Third Set Summary
The Vandals came out strong and controlled the third set, finding an 18-10 lead that would give them the cushion they needed to take the set. Idaho maintained their lead for the rest of the set. A 4-0 run with the score 23-14 forced a UNC timeout. The Bears scored three straight points out of the timeout, but a service error gave Idaho set point, 25-17.

Fourth Set Summary
Kaela Straw laid down a kill in set four to increase the Vandals lead, 14-11, in a tight set. UNC put up a couple kills to the tie the set, 14-14, forcing an Idaho timeout. The Vandals scored two straight after the timeout; however, the Bears never-give-up mentality knotted the set again at 18-18. Idaho and UNC traded points, and the match came down to back-to-back Idaho blocks. Idaho won the fourth set, 25-22.

Vandal Notables
Straw led the Vandals with 16 kills while adding five digs and four blocks. Sharp followed with 15 kills and two digs while Alycia Wodke contributed 20 digs. Mathis tallied 37 assists and Ryter put up eight blocks.
