PRINCEVILLE, Hawaii - Idaho men's golf recorded 10 of its 13 birdies over the final 12 holes Monday, but it was not enough to overcome a slow start to the second round of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational. The Vandals shot 9-over (297) as a team and sit in 19th place through 36 holes at 15-over (294-297=591).
"The conditions really turned with four holes to go and we were able to hang on," said head coach
David Nuhn. "There were a few tough holes at the end of the round that you have to execute and we dropped a couple of shots, but it was the slow start that cost us."
Enrique Marin bogeyed his first four holes and after getting one stroke back on his fifth hole, carded a double bogey on the next. Marin rebounded with three late birdies to shoot 4-over (76) and fall back to even par for the tournament.
"Enrique had an extremely rare off day today," Nuhn said. "He and Klaus drive the bus for us and we need everyone else to pick up the slack on those days when they aren't scoring."
Freshman
Colt Sherrell recorded Idaho's best round with an even-par 72. Sherrell birdied two of his first four holes then, after a rough stretch on his back nine, collected another birdie on his 17th hole of the day to get back to even.
"I was proud of Colt for putting together a good round on a day like today." Nuhn said. "He was able to battle and rise above some of the challenges."
The final round is slated for Tuesday, beginning with an 8 a.m. HT shotgun start.
"The scores were a little up across the board today," Nuhn said. "If we can get tomorrow's round in without any major weather issues, I know we can shoot a low number headed into our winter offseason. I still think we're close to that under-par, momentous round."
