MOSCOW, Idaho— Four-of-six defeats in singles highlighted the first day of the Gonzaga Invitational inside the Stevens Center on Friday. The Vandals fell to the Zags on the doubles side.
Idaho opened play with singles as the Vandals nearly swept its opponent.
Marianna Petrei toppled Portland's Lourdes Ramalle, 6-0 and 6-4.
Laura Spataro knocked down Anna Oberg of Portland in a three-setter (2-6,6-2, 6-2).
Maggie Chen posted a win over Emily Soares (6-4, 3-6, 6-2), while
Marta Magalhães grabs the final singles match in win over Portland with a score of 6-3, 7-6.
Three Vandals pairs fell to teams from Gonzaga to end doubles action on the first day of competition.
The round-robin tournament picks back up Saturday in the second day of the Gonzaga Invitational. The Vandals first serve for doubles action will be at 2 p.m. followed by singles at 3 p.m. against New Mexico State. Live video will be available each day of the tournament
