@VandalsWBB Lands Arizona Transfer Shalyse Smith

MOSCOW, Idaho-- Idaho women's hoops signed Shalyse Smith to a financial aid agreement, head coach Jon Newlee announced Tuesday morning. Smith a freshman transfer from the University of Arizona, will join the Vandals for the spring semester.

"Shalyse is an unbelievably talented player both offensively and defensively," Newlee said. "There is a reason she was ranked as the 7th best wing in the country and the 48th best player in the country regardless of position as a high school senior last year. She is so explosive with the ball and is a relentless physical rebounder. She plays with such a high motor defensively,  and is so athletic she will be able to guard 1 through 5 for us. I really just love her all-around game and the fact that she plays with such passion and desire when she steps on the floor. Shalyse has a great personality, she is a perfect fit for our Vandal Family! It is a great day to be a Vandal!"

A Tacoma, Wash. native, Smith competed at Arizona during the 2018 fall semester where she appeared in three games and averaged 13.5 minutes. The four-star recruit was highly recruited out of Bellarmine Prep where she averaged 16.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 3.6 steals and 1.6 blocks per game her senior year.

Prior to her time at Arizona, Smith enjoyed a decorated prep career at Bellarmine where she finished rated as the  No. 7 forward and No. 48 player in the nation by ProspectsNation.com.

The versatile 6-foot-1 forward ended her high school career with 1,246 points as she posted 15 double-doubles with eight games of 20+ points and a season-high of 24 (twice). Smith was selected to the 2017-18 Class 4A All-State First Team… Named 2017-18 Tacoma News Tribune's All-Area Player of the Year… 2017-18 USA Today Washington First Team selection… 3-time South Puget Sports League MVP...2015-16 USA Today All-Western Washington Honorable Mention… 2016-17 USA Today Washington Second Team selection…
