Box Score SPOKANE—The Vandal men's tennis team traveled up I-95 to take on Gonzaga on Tuesday. Idaho was competitive throughout the night but came away empty-handed for the second straight match.
Gonzaga (5-0) opened the evening with a win in doubles. The Zags opened with a 6-4 win on the No. 2 court, but Idaho's
Felipe Fonseca and
Esteban Santibanez got Idaho back to even with a 7-5 win at No. 3. It took a tiebreak to settle the doubles point at the No. 1 position. Sam Feit and Ruadhan O'Sullivan got the win over
Mark Kovacs and
Carlos Longhi Neto, 7-6(5).
Idaho (0-2) showed improvement in singles play from its season-opening loss at Oregon. The Vandals forced four of the six matches into third sets. Gonzaga got out to a 3-0 lead, claiming wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
Gonzaga needed just one of the four remaining matches to clinch the night. That win came on the No. 6 court where Kyler Everly needed a third-set tiebreak to defeat Coutinho, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(3).
Idaho returns to action later this week. The team travels to Portland on Friday to take on the University of Portland. Â
