LEWISTON, Idaho—Idaho men's tennis rebounded from Thursday's loss at Montana with a 5-2 win over Southern Utah on Saturday. The win secures Idaho's spot in the upcoming Big Sky Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Vandals improved to a conference-best 8-1. They join Northern Arizona (7-2) and Weber State (8-3) as the three teams guaranteed to be in the tournament field.
Idaho got a 6-2 win from
Felipe Fonseca and
Guilherme Scarpelli to open doubles.
Mark Kovacs and
Carlos Longhi Neto clinched the doubles point at No. 1 with their 6-4 verdict.
The Silver and Gold continued to build on its advantage at the start of singles play. Fonseca picked up Idaho's first individual win. He played at the No. 3 position for the first time this season, resulting in a 7-6(6), 6-1 win over SUU's Conor Tordoff.
Kovacs registered a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 1, putting Idaho up 3-0. The win was the 94th of his career. He is now one win shy of tying Alan Shin (95) for the most in program history.
Lucas Coutinho battled on the No. 4 court, clinching the match with his 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 win over Guy Feigin.
Scarpelli finished off the scoring for the Vandals. He moved up to No. 2 for the first time this season, resulting in a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win.
Idaho returns to action against Idaho State on Sunday. The match is set for 10 a.m. PT in Lewiston. Â
