SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Championship field has been announced, with three Vandals earning spots in the upcoming NCAA West Preliminary, hosted By Sacramento State May 24-26.
Austin Beyer,
Andrea Condie and
Zachary Short will all be making their NCAA Championships debuts next week in California. All three will compete on Saturday, May 26. Beyer will get things started in the javelin at noon, with Short following in the shot put at 4 p.m. Condie wraps up in the 5k at 8:45 p.m. The competition will be streamed on FloTrack.
Beyer obliterated his personal best in the javelin at last week's Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships, throwing 64.63 meters (212-0) to take bronze and move into eighth in program history in the event. Beyer had set his previous PR at his last meet before the Big Sky Championships, but rested from competition for nearly a month to recover from a nagging injury. Beyer, a junior, was close to qualifying in both of his first two years in Moscow, finishing those seasons ranked 71
st and 78
th, respectively, in the West.
Condie qualified in the 5000-meters, and narrowly missed making the field for the 10k as well. Condie scored in both events at the Big Sky Championships last week, including taking silver in the 5k on day two. She's had an impressive season and has climbed the Idaho record books in a number of events. She is one of two Vandals all-time to be in the top-five in both the 5k and 10k, joining former teammate Kinsey (Gomez) Middleton, who would go on to earn All-America honors in 2016.
Short, Idaho's top-ranked athlete heading into the weekend, will take on the field in the shot put. Short has had a breakout season, taking gold in the event at both the Indoor and Outdoor Big Sky Championships. His season and career best throw of 18.23 meters (59-9.75) puts him in eighth in program history, 28
th in the West this year and 56
th nationally.
Check in next week as GoVandals.com sits down with each of the athletes ahead of their trip to Sacramento.
