MOSCOW, Idaho – The exhibition season has come and gone for Idaho soccer, with the Vandals defeating Central Washington, 2-0, on Tuesday night in the Kibbie Dome.
"I saw great confidence on the ball. We moved the ball well," said head coach
Jeremy Clevenger. "We were very organized defensively and we created a lot of opportunities. 22 shots in a game, you can never be disappointed with that."
The offense got going early, with
Myah Merino firing in a long-range shot that beat the CWU keeper to put the Vandals up one.
"I think our transition was very strong," Clevenger said. "I would like to see a little more quality in the final third, but we created a lot of opportunities with movement and pressure. And scoring a couple of goals was good for us tonight."
Jordyn Dion doubled the advantage in the 60
th minute, finishing from inside the box after a perfect free kick from
Maddie Haas.
Avrie Fox had the play of the night on the defensive side of the ball, saving a penalty kick in the 64
th minute. In all, 25 players saw the field, gaining important experience ahead of a long season.
"It was an opportunity for a lot of players to play, a lot of players to get an opportunity to prove themselves. And to be honest, I think we had several players step up in this last exhibition."
The regular season kicks off on Friday at 5:30 p.m., at Nevada. The Vandals return home to take on Grambling at 4 p.m. in the Kibbie Dome on Friday, Aug. 24.
