MOSCOW, Idaho – A pair of goals from
Morgan Crosby and an exceptional finish from
Kayla Watanabe lifted Idaho (1-2) past Grambling (1-2), 3-1, on Friday night in the Kibbie Dome.
The Vandals took over early, controlling the ball for most of the opening minutes. The first big break came in the 13
th minute, with Crosby netting a perfect shot into the top right corner of the net from 28-yards out.
Bridget Daley got the play started, picking up the ball in the offensive third. She found
Myah Merino, who touched it along to
Maddie Haas, who then picked out Crosby.
Idaho would double its lead in the 33
rd minute, with Watanabe scoring her first goal of the year. Again, the play began with some quality touches from the Vandals, but this time it began on the back line.
Taylor Brust controlled a pass from
Kayleigh Frederick, then found
Natalie Fischer making a run up field. Fischer took a touch, then sent Watanabe in behind the defense. Watanabe handled the rest.
The third Vandal goal also included some exceptional connections before eventually finding the feet of
Claire Johnson at the top of the 18. Johnson took her chance, but the Grambling keeper was able to make a tremendous save to push the ball into the crossbar. Crosby was ready, however, after following the shot, and had time to take a touch and blast the ball into the back of the net for her second of the day.
Grambling would get one back in the 82
nd minute on a penalty kick.
The Vandals will take the rest of the weekend off, before heading out to Montana to face North Dakota and Vermont. Check back with GoVandals.com next week for more information.
