FULLERTON, Calif. – The Fullerton Classic did not get out to the start that Idaho volleyball (5-5) had hoped for, with the Vandals falling to San Francisco (5-4) in straight sets.
Kaela Straw led Idaho with eight kills, but hit just .067 on the day.
Nikki Ball hit .267 with six kills. As a team, the Vandals hit .105, decidedly their lowest hitting percentage of the season. Defensively the vandals did well, picking up nine total team blocks and holding the Dons to hitting .142.
Idaho seemed the aggressor in the opening set. After each team felt out the other to get things started, the Vandals went on a tear to get up, 20-14. The Dons took over from there, going on an 11-2 run to take the set, 25-22.
Yet again, the Vandals jumped out to a quick lead, scoring six-of-seven to open the second set. San Francisco bounced back, as it did in the first, to claim a lead of its own midway through the set. Idaho hung out to force extra points, but the Dons eventually won, 28-26.
San Francisco came out hot for the third, eventually going up 20-14 late. The Vandals kept fighting until the end, cutting the deficit to just one at 21-20, but could not get over the hump and eventually fell, 25-21.
There's no time for rest for the Vandals, with a meeting against UC Riverside scheduled for 5 p.m.
