MISSOULA, Mont. – Idaho soccer got back to its winning ways on Sunday at the Montana Invitational, defeating Vermont, 1-0, to pick up the weekend split.
"I thought we did well. We kind of dominated on the stat line," said head coach
Jeremy Clevenger. "We were organized. Being dangerous on set pieces gives us a confidence boost. And with the one goal lead we never looked back and saw the game out."
The Vandals dominated the possession early on, keeping Vermont on its heels for the opening 20 minutes. Idaho, however, wasn't able to capitalize until late in the frame.
After a corner came bouncing back out of the box,
Hadley Sbrega recycled and sent in a perfect cross to the front of the goal.
Anna Rose Wiencek did what she does best and rose up to bury the header into the back of the net.
Makayla Presgrave picked up her first shutout of the season. The Idaho defense was strong in support, holding Vermont to just eight total shots and two on frame.
"I think we had a good understanding of how Vermont could beat us. And to be fair, our players executed well. They knew how to cut them off in dangerous areas and stay organized. Top to bottom, I think overall it was a good performance."
Things got physical in the second half as Idaho looked to kill the clock and get the victory. In the end, the Vandals were able to hold the ball in the offensive third and walk out with the 1-0 win.
"Our second unit came on and kept the level and that's all you can ask. Credit to them, they did an amazing job to get that goal. AR, just an amazing header and Hadley's service was great.
But that was probably the difference for us today. They only used three subs and we had eight. When we play two games in a weekend we have to have that depth and rely on the second wave. If we can continue that type of performance from that second group I think we'll win a lot of games."
Idaho returns to the Palouse to take on Washington State on Thursday night in Pullman at 7 p.m., before taking on UC Riverside in the Dome on Sunday afternoon. Check back with GoVandals.com later this week for more information.
"They're a nationally ranked team and it will be a good test. They're going to test us in ways that other teams can't, with their athleticism. If we can stay organized and stay to the game plan we can make it hard on them. And that's what I'm looking for, to go and grind out and get a result."
