MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho women's soccer knocked off Sacramento State 2-0 Sunday, in the Kibbie Dome, to start Big Sky play 2-0. The Vandals (5-5-1, 2-0 Big Sky) shut out their first two conference opponents for the first time in program history, on the way to their fifth 2-0 league start all-time.
Â
Myah Merino and
Hadley Sbrega punched in goals, while
Makayla Presgrave recorded two saves for her fourth clean sheet of the season. The Vandals surrendered just three shots to the Hornets (2-7-2, 1-1 Big Sky).
Â
Merino staked Idaho to an early lead, scoring in the 14th minute. She raced onto a ball sent forward by
Taylor Brust, driving down the right side of the box. Merino neared the end line before firing near post and sneaking a shot inside the keeper for her second goal of the season.
Â
The Vandals remained the aggressor the rest of the first half and took a 1-0 advantage into the break. The start of the second half was no different. Two shots and a corner kick in the first 10 minutes of the period helped set up the insurance goal.
Â
After a corner kick, the ball settled at the feet of
Kaysie Bruce outside the penalty area. Bruce sent it wide to
Kayleigh Frederick who one-timed a lofted ball across the face of the goal. Sacramento State goalkeeper Kaylyn Evans was only able to get her fingertips to it and Sbrega took advantage, finishing a volley from three yards out. Sbrega's first goal of the year came in the 56th minute.
Â
Idaho earned nine corner kicks of the day to just two from Sacramento State.
Â
The Vandals hit the road next week for matches at Northern Colorado (Friday; 7 p.m. MT) and Montana (Sunday; 1 p.m. MT) to continue Big Sky play. Links to live coverage of both matches can be found on the soccer schedule page at GoVandals.com.
