Bascon-Perez, Santibanez Advance to Final at ITA Regional

RESULTS

DENVER, Colo
. – Idaho men's tennis made a splash at the ITA Regional in Denver, with one doubles team advancing to the final.

Francisco Bascon - Perez had a great week in Denver.  He teamed up with Esteban Santibanez and made a run at the championship before ultimately falling in the final.

The pair got the tournament started with an 8-5 win in the round of 64.  After an 8-3 win over Michiel Van School and Kris Van Wyk of Weber State in the round of 32, they needed extra tennis to take down Daniel Dudockin and Julien Evrard of Nevada, 8-7 (2).  Next up, Bascon and Santibanez took down the top-ranked team they faced, No. 42 in the country, Sean Tullis and Ben Gajardo of BYU, 8-4.

Tournament play moved to a best two-of-three format for the semifinals.  The Vandals made short work of BYU's Mateo Vereau and Sean Hill, 6-2, 6-4, but ultimately fell to Matt Summers and James Davis of Denver, 6-1, 6-3, in the final.

They both played well at singles, too.  Bascon defeated Clayton Alenik despite dropping the opening set in the round of 64.  After going down in the first, 6-4, Bascon responded by taking the second, 6-2, and the third, 6-3, to earn the win.  He ultimately fell in the round of 32, to Sean Hill, 6-2, 6-3.

Santibanez fell in the opening round, but made a run in the consolation bracket.  First he defeated Sergiu Bucur, 6-2, 7-5, then took down Alexander Groves, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-5.  Santibanez dominated New Mexico State's Timothee Curnier, 6-0, 6-1, to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.  There, his run came to an end with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) loss to Denver's Pedro Fernandez Del Valle.

Bruno Casino earned a win on the week.  He defeated Christian Damgaard-Qvist, 6-4, 6-4, in the consolation bracket round of 64.
