MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho Track & Field program is thrilled to announce the addition of
Tayler LyDay of BenÂson Polytechnic High School in Portland, Ore.
Â
LyDay was an outstanding basketball player being recruited to play in college, but has chosen to pursue track & field at the collegiate level after taking up the sport in just her senior year.
Â
Despite it being her first year participating in the sport of track & field, LyDay's talent was clear. She foÂcused primarily on the triple jump and after only doing the event for a few weeks, she managed to post a mark of 39'0" at the PIL district championship, where she won the event qualifying her for the Oregon State ChampiÂonships. LyDay placed third at the Oregon State meet in the triple jump with a mark of 37' 5.5".
Â
LyDay, standing 6-1, was an incredible basÂketball player at Benson. She averaged 19.2 points per game as a junior and 17.2 as a senior and was ranked as the number one basketball prospect in the state of OreÂgon by Maxpreps.com in 2019. She used her athleticism to make incredible plays, like this game winning coast to coast buzzer beater against Beaverton in the semi-fiÂnal round of the OSAA state tournament her junior year. LyDay led her high school team to a State Championship team title as a senior.
Â
"Tayler is very raw to track and field and has already put up some big marks. It will be fun to watch her grow. She is a great student and we are excited to have her join the vandal Family." –
Tim Cawley, director of track and field/cross country
