Men’s Golf Adds Two

MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho men's golf and head coach David Nuhn are excited to announce two new signees, with Jose Suryadinata and Joe Gustavel set to join the program in the fall.

"I'm thrilled with the additions of Jose and Joe to our young team," Nuhn said. "They will push the current golfers to new heights and I look forward to working with them in the future. Go Vandals!"

Suryadinata joins the program after competing for Santa Maria Catholic High School.  Originally from Surabaya, Indonesia, Suryadinata first came to the United States in the summer to compete in several amateur events, including finishing second at the FGC International Championship in July.  He is the No. 2 ranked recruit in Indonesia's class of 2020, and the No. 9 international recruit in his class, according to Jr. Golf Scoreboard.

In 2016, Suryadinata became the youngest member of the Indonesian Developmental Team and the youngest ever to represent the East Java province at the Indonesia National Games.  He earned low Indonesian amateur honors at the 2017 Indonesian Open, an Asian Tour professional event.  In 2018 he was crowned back-to-back champion at the No. 1 and No. 2 Elite Indonesian Amateur Championships, and took second at the Pondok Indah Junior Golf Championship.  Suryadinata finished in the top-five at the 2019 Indonesian National Amateur Championship.

"Jose is one of the top recruits we've been able to land here at Idaho," said Nuhn. "I believe his tenacity and no-quit attitude will impact our team from day one. I see Jose making a big impact on our competitiveness and I think the team is excited to welcome an international player so committed to excellence on the course and in the classroom. I'm very excited to welcome Jose to the Vandals and know we are an improved team with his signing."

Gustavel will join the Vandals after an impressive prep career at Boise High.  There, he led his team to a runner-up finish at the 2019 5A Idaho State High School Championships by finishing second as an individual.  No stranger to the national scene, Gustavel participated in the Boy's Junior PGA Championship in 2019, as well as the IMG Junior World Championship in 2016.  He was named the Idaho Golf Association Diamond Line Player of the Year in 2018.

Gustavel was selected to represent Idaho at the Junior America's Cup in 2018 and 2019, and twice competed at the Eddie Hogan Cup Team Matches (2018 and 2019).  He finished in the top-10 at the AJGA Kyle Stanley Championship in 2019 and was the runner-up at the John Dropping Championships in 2019.

"I've always believed that the best players in Idaho should stay and play at the best university in Idaho," Nuhn said. "I think we got one of the best, not only in Idaho but the region in Joe Gustavel. Coming from a family of Vandals is very special as well. Joe has been on a great trajectory the last few seasons working with another Vandal, Kevin Burton, in Boise. I think that work with Kevin has really paid off and Joe is coming into his own on the golf course. I only see him continuing to improve once he begins here in Moscow."

Academics are also very important to Gustavel, who earned 5A SIC All-Academic Team honors and 5A SIC Distinguished Academic Award honors three times.  He also has a long history with the Vandals and the golf program at Idaho.  His father, Matt, competed for the Vandals in the late '80's and early '90's, while his grandfather, Terry, competed for the team in the 1960's.  His mother and two sisters also attended Idaho.
