Vandal Standouts Shine in Home Finale

Idaho secured six event titles at the DI Invitational Team Challenge

02/01/2019

MOSCOW, Idaho - Six Vandals were victorious at the DI Invitational Team Challenge Friday, in the Kibbie Dome as Idaho women's track and field finished second and the men took third in the final home meet of the indoor track season. Idaho asserted its dominance in the women's jumps and the men's throws.

Zachary Short broke his own Big Sky Conference indoor record in winning the shot put with a throw of 19.01 meters (62-4.5). Short's mark is an inch and a half better than his previous best set earlier this month, and two inches farther than the previous Big Sky record which was set in 2007. Cullen Williams won the men's weight throw at 17.76 meters (58-4). Short took fourth in the event.

Ben Doucette continued his dominance this season in the 60-meter hurdles. Doucette ran 8.0 seconds in the prelims before running away with a win in 8.09 in the finals, nearly two-tenths of a second ahead of the runner up.

Vandal women took the top two spots in the long jump and the triple jump, led by Katrina Moreland's winning triple jump of 11.96 meters (39-3) - the second-best mark in the Big Sky this season. Jordyn Rauer was the runner up at 11.68 meters (38-4).

Rechelle Meade outdueled teammated Henrike Fiedler to take the long jump crown. Meade posted a season-best leap of 5.83 meters (19-1.5), just ahead of Fiedler's 5.81 meters (19-0.5).

Fiedler earned her spot atop the podium in the 60-meter dash, leading an Idaho sweep of the top three spots in a photo finish. The triple jump duo of Moreland and Rauer took second and third, respectively. The trio was separated by just three one-hundredths of a second as Fiedler's winning time of 7.93 seconds was just ahead of Moreland at 7.95 and Rauer at 7.96.

The Vandal women also received strong contributions from its distance contingent. Malaina Thacker, Kara Story and Krista Story finished second, third and fourth in the mile, respectively. Erin Hagen clocked a 2:14.36 to take second in the 800-meter run, the seventh-fastest time in the Big Sky this season.

Idaho will go on the road next weekend for its final competitions before the Big Sky Indoor Championships. The Vandals will split up at multiple meets next week, including the Husky Classic in Seattle and the Boise State Challenge.

The conference meet will take place Feb. 21-23, in Bozeman, Mont.
