Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Better Late Than Never

Women’s hoops win, 75-74, at the buzzer over rival Eastern Washington

CHENEY, Wash. — Monday afternoon's game ended in a bit of a controversy as Idaho women's basketball upended the Eagles, 75-74 inside Reese Court.

With 1.6 seconds left in regulation, the Vandals were able to launch the ball down court to Lizzy Klinker who passes it to senior Mikayla Ferenz, who led all scorers with 29 points. Ferenz banked in the triple after the final buzzer sounded, but the game was not finished as the officials conducted a review of the official clock.  After a lengthy review, the officials confirmed that the clock started too soon and declared the Vandals victorious. Taylor Pierce added 13 points while Gina Marxen scored 11. Lizzy Klinker owned the glass with 12 boards.

THE GAME
Ferenz scored 13 of her 29 points in the first half as she gave the Vandals a boost leading the team in points. Idaho outscored the Eagles in both the first and second quarter by as many as four points with a 38-32 advantage going into the locker. The Vandals' frontcourt completely owned the boards with 25 rebounds to EWU's 11.

Eastern Washington worked to tie the game, 41-41, after two straight trips to the free throw line. Idaho quickly responded with a 4-0 run, but the Eagles hung around and left the third quarter down by eight, 59-47.

In the fourth, the Eagles outscored the Vandals 25-18, but in the end, it was down to one play, one decision. Idaho women's basketball finished the nail-biter, 75-74.
