BOZEMAN, Mont. – A pair of Vandals took home individual titles and a number of other scored as Idaho took part in day one of the 2019 Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The men go into the final day of competition in third with 26.5 points, while the women are in sixth with 20 points. Northern Arizona leads for the men with 57.5 points, while Idaho State is topping the women's side with 40 points.
Zachary Short was unbelievable in the shot put. He smashed his own conference record, throwing 19.81 meters (65-0.00). Heading into the day that mark would have been seventh best in the nation, with the top-16 throwers advancing to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
Rechelle Meade dominated in the long jump to earn her fifth career medal in the event. Her second jump of 5.91 meters was already enough to win, but she closed the competition by leaping 6.13 meters (20-1.50) to secure the win. Freshman
Henrike Fiedler did well in her first conference championship event, finishing fifth with a leap of 5.71 meters (18-9.00).
The squad of
Caleb Seely,
Mack Baxter,
Dean Ellenwood and
Ben Shaw was strong in the men's distance medley, earning second with a time of 10:13.27. The women's team of
Krista Story,
Aaryanna Kurucz,
Nathalia Campos and
Malaina Thacker placed fifth at 12:09.43.
Freshman
Zachary Nunis placed second in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 7.66 meters (25-1.75), putting him in the top-30 in the nation this season.
Chloe Woest earned eighth in the pole vault, clearing 3.63 meters (11-10.75).
Britt Ipsen scored for the Vandals in the high jump, clearing 1.94 meters (6-4.25) to tie for eighth. On the track,
Andrea Condie scored a point for Idaho by finishing eighth in the 5,000-meters with a time of 17:41.13.
MOVING ON
Ben Doucette won his heat in the 60-meter hurdles, advancing to Saturday's final with a time of 8.18 seconds.
Nik Chappee advanced in the 400-meters, finishing seventh overall at 49.16 seconds.
Lauren Paven also advanced in the 400 on the women's side, with a time of 58.15 seconds.
Jenner Higgins advanced in the 800-meters with a time of 1:55.48. On the women's side, it was
Kaleala Bass qualifying for Saturday's final, running a time of 2:12.58.
Competition concludes on Saturday.
