Hausmann Fires 68, Vandals Move Up

Sophie Hausmann matched the lowest round of the day to climb into a tie for fourth

03/30/2019

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. - Sophie Hausmann carded five birdies on her way to a 4-under 68 Saturday, in the second round of the Bryan National Collegiate Invitational. Hausmann led an inspired effort from Idaho women's golf, with the team posting a 6-over 294, an 11-stroke improvement from Friday, to leap Michigan and Kentucky and take over 10th place. Hausmann is tied for fourth place through 36 holes. Fellow senior Michelle Kim shaved eight strokes off her score from the first round to the second.

"I'm especially proud of the team for rebounding from yesterday," said head coach Lisa Johnson. "They kept the belief that we can score on this challenging course and proved it today."

Hausmann was on fire on the front nine, recording four birdies and one bogey. She made the turn and posted eight consecutive pars before a birdie on her final hole of the day gave her a 68, tied for the best score of the round, and put her at 3-under for the tournament. Hausmann is ranked No. 73 in this week's GolfStat Rankings and is one of 13 nationally-ranked competitors in the event. She currently leads 10 of them. The only top-100 golfers ahead of Hausmann are a pair of teammates from the host school, Wake Forest, who are both in the top 25 nationally and tied for the tournament lead at 8-under.

"Sophie's ball striking was excellent today," Johnson said. "She is improving every week and again moving up the leaderboard in the second round."

Kim climbed 16 spots on the leaderboard, thanks to a 2-over 74. After carding just nine pars and no birdies Friday, Kim responded with two birdies on the front nine Saturday, and went on to post 13 pars in a steady round.

Valeria Patino remains in the top 25 through two rounds. Patino, who was the top Vandal Friday with an even-par 72, posted a 3-over 75 in the second round and is tied for 21st. Patino's round included three birdies and she was at 1-under through 12 holes before dropping four shots on a three-hole stretch. Three pars at the end of the day kept her in contention for a seventh top-25 result this year.

Freshmen Vicky Tsai and Eddie Hsu each posted a 5-over 77, both improving on their first-round scores. Tsai was one stroke better than her 78 Friday, while Hsu improved by six shots.

The final round tees off Sunday, at 8:30 a.m. ET/5:30 a.m. PT with a shotgun start. Idaho will start on the back nine, paired with East Carolina and UNC Greensboro. The Vandals are one stroke behind East Carolina entering the final day.
