UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - Freshman
Colt Sherrell led Idaho men's golf on the first day of the Redhawk Invitational, Monday at Chambers Bay Golf Course. Sherrell, playing near his hometown of Maple Valley, Wash., opened the tournament with a 4-under 67 in the morning round, followed by a 1-under 70 in the afternoon. He is tied for 10th at 5-under through 36 holes.
The Vandals are in a three-way tie for 12th at 1-under as a team. Idaho is three shots out of sixth place entering the final round. Each round Monday featured three of the four counting scores at or under par.
"Today was a great day," said head coach
David Nuhn. "It was awesome to see Colt play well and for Sean to have a great second round. We needed that fourth score to get up near the top."
Sherrell was the lone Vandal with two sub-par rounds, but
Travis Hansen is 1-under for the tournament. Hansen is tied for 39th after shooting a 70 in the first round and a 71 in the second.
Sean Langham posted Idaho's second-best single-round score of the day, carding a 3-under 68 in the second round. Langham is tied for 45th at even par after starting the day with a 3-over 74.
The Vandals shot a 2-under 282 in the first round, thanks in part to
Joel Veenstra's even-par 71.
"It's exciting to see the future of Vandal golf out here playing solid," Nuhn said. "We're looking for five solid rounds Tuesday, with perfect weather and an incredible golf course."
The last round tees off Tuesday, with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. PT.
