MISSOULA, Mont. – Idaho got out to an excellent start on day one at the 2019 Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships.  Henrike Fiedler was the star of the day, breaking the program record in the long jump to take gold.  Idaho's women are currently in fifth with 27 points, while the men are in eighth with 21 points.
 
Fiedler leapt 6.20 meters (20-4.25) on her final jump to win the event.  The mark breaks Rechelle Meade's school record of 6.09 meters set in 2017, and moves Fiedler into a tie for 10^th in Big Sky history.  Meade also broke her old school record, and took second overall at 6.15 meters (20-2.25).  Fiedler and Meade entered the meet ranked 4^th and 6^th, respectively.  Both marks are currently inside the top-35 in the West region.  Zachary Nunis placed fourth on the men's side, with his best leap going 7.41 meters (24-3.75).  He is ranked 39^th in the West.
 
Andrea Condie placed fourth in the 10,000-meters with a time of 36:34.95.  She entered the meet ranked sixth in the conference and 39^th in the West.  Dwain Stucker took fifth on the men's side at 30:36.30, despite coming in ranked 18^th in the conference in the event.
 
Zachary Short got his Championships started with points for the Vandals, taking fourth in the discus at 52.66 meters (172-9).  Cullen Williams beat his rank in the hammer throw to finish sixth at 57.42 meters (188-4) to set a new personal best.
 
Britt Ipsen placed fifth in the high jump to beat his rank by three places, and tied his season-best at 1.98 meters (6-6.00).  Hannah Ringel threw 14.24 meters (46-8.75) in the shot put to finish fifth.
 
MOVING ON
 
Kaizer Gillispie was the top qualifier in the 400-meters on the men's side, winning his heat at 47.37 seconds, his fastest time of the season.
 
A pair of runners are moving on in the 800-meters on both the men's and the women's sides.  Jenner Higgins won his heat with a time of 1:52.15 to automatically qualify, while Nathan Burton finished third in his heat to also advance.  Burton smashed his personal-best in the event, finishing in 1:51.97, the third fastest time of the day.  Kaleala Bass and Krista Story are moving on after finishing second in their respective heats at 2:11.28 and 2:14.39.
 
Kara Story won her heat in the 1500-meters to advance to Saturday's final with a time of 4:36.80.  Aaryanna Kurucz will compete in the final of the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday after running 1:02.46.  Mack Baxter will move on on the men's side after winning his heat in 52.21 seconds, his fastest time of the season.  The time would currently be good enough for 42^nd in the West.
 
Ben Doucette is moving on after running 14.42 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles.  Doucette is running in his first meet of the season after recovering from injury.
